Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Alabama

TMS is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation designed for those with Major Depressive Disorder who have tried other methods of alleviating their depression. Many people suffer from treatment-resistant depression, so if this is you, know that you are not alone and that there are other treatment options for your chronic depression.

Using magnetic fields, TMS stimulates specific brain regions that are implicated in depression. TMS is an outpatient treatment that does not require anesthesia. It is very safe and is a promising option for you if more traditional methods of treating depression have been ineffective.

What happens during a TMS procedure?

  • Because TMS uses magnetic pulses, you will be asked to remove any magnet-sensitive items such as jewelry and credit cards.
  • You will be asked to wear earplugs for protection and comfort.
  • If you are a first-time patient, measurements will be made of your head to assure the equipment will be positioned properly.
  • The TMS physician will administer a few brief pulses in order to calibrate the machine to your specific needs.
  • The equipment will then be rested on your head and the treatment will commence.
  • The treatment consists of a clicking noises and a slight tapping feeling under the headpiece.
  • The procedure time varies for each patient, but typically lasts around 30-40 minutes

Who cannot receive TMS therapy?

Those with metal implants in or around the head cannot receive TMS therapy.
